CARMEL and OAKLAND – Lawrence Kelly, 77, passed away unexpectedly Oct. 15, 2004, at the home of his niece in Oakland. He was born Aug. 16, 1927, at Carmel, a son of Alexander and Emma (Getchell) Kelly. He attended Carmel schools and served in the U.S. Army in Guam during World War II, and until 1947. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon. After the war he worked at Diamond Match Company before he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Lawrence was honorably discharged in 1966. He retired as head cook at Howard Johnson’s in Waterville. He will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and will be dearly missed. He enjoyed watching the ball games with his brothers, and was a devoted Boston Red Sox fan, and he despised the New York Yankees. He liked to play poker and cribbage. Lawrence is survived by a son, Michael Kelly; a stepdaughter, Linda King and family; and a stepson, Victor Rusecky, all of Saco; three brothers, Langdon Kelly, Alfred and wife, Shirley Kelly, Lewis and wife, Ruby Kelly; and a sister, Wanda Kelly, all of Oakland; a number of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a stepson, William Rusecky. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Newport, with Pastor Al H. Worden officiating. Interment will be in the family lot, Highland Cemetery, Carmel.
