OLD TOWN – Lawrence “Joe” Caron, 81, was finally defeated by cancer Nov. 15, 2006. Joe was born Dec. 8, 1924, in Old Town, the older son of John and Belva Caron. Joe served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a Maine Game Warden for 30 years, retiring in 1976. He was a talented sign painter until a second retirement in 1985. He was a whiz with a fly rod all his adult life, as well as a ham radio operator, W1AYX, for 53 years. Joe was a gifted wood worker in his off-hours, a devoted and adored husband for more than 60 years, and was a much-loved father and example for nearly as long. Surviving are his wife, Joan B. (Dufour) Caron of Old Town; four children, John and his wife, Barbara, of Enfield, Susan Nealey and her husband, Jim, of Saverna Park, Md., Mary Durost and her husband, Jay, of Bucksport and Peter and his wife, Lisa, of Swan Lake. He was also the much loved grampy/papa to Jack, Josh, AJ, Joanna, Kate, Emily, Brett and Jase; and great-grampy to Laura, Samuel, Benjamin and Lydia. He is also survived by a sister, Elaine Upton and her husband, William; and a brother, Richard and his companion, Gloria Brown, of Old Town. Joe was predeceased by his sisters, Joyce Burt and Evelyn Bickford. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Old Town, with the Rev. Wilfred Labbe, pastor, celebrant. A reception will be held immediately after at the parish center. Interment will be at Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Family Parish Building Fund, 429 Main St., Old Town, ME 04468. Arrangements by Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor.
