APPLETON – Lt. Lee Clinton Calderwood died Sept. 13, 2006. Born Nov. 5, 1925, in Camden, he was the son of Luther J. and Freda E. Gushee Calderwood. At age 1, he moved to Woronoco, Mass. Mr. Calderwood graduated from Westfield High School, Westfield, Mass., and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific theater. He was in the Battle of Kwojalein Atol in the Marshall Islands; he served in the Battle of Saipan, in the Marianas, and in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, in the Philippines. He held the rank of signalman second class. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal 3-Stars and the Philippine-Liberation Medal. Upon returning to the United States, he graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth with a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering. He worked for Saco-Lowell Shops in Biddeford for four years as a senior design engineer. He married the former Louise Grinnell June 26, 1954. Because of the company’s moving to South Carolina, he found employment at Raytheon Co. in Massachusetts. He worked at Lowell, Sudbury, Waltham and Wayland plants making a total of 18 years with the company. While at Raytheon, he designed mechanical packaging for electronics on the Sparrow III, Apollo and Sidewinder missiles. He also worked on the Polaris and on the follow-up Poseidon Submarine launched missiles. He joined the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1959, retiring with the rank of lieutenant. While living in Massachusetts, he enrolled at Northeastern University where he graduated with a master’s degree in education. He returned to Maine in August 1975 and was employed at the Veterans Administration Center, Togus, where he was the safety engineer for approximately 13 years, retiring in January 1988. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Louise of Appleton; son, Joel Emery Calderwood of Appleton; daughter, Sarah Perkins and her husband, Jeffrey, of Bangor; grandsons, Tyler and Jesse Perkins of Bangor; half sister, Joanne Buzzell of Monson, Mass.; sisters-in-law, Ruth Mower of Winthrop, Mass., and Betty Ripley of Holden, Mass.; brother-in-law, Edward Grinnell of Warren; many cousins, nieces and nephews Visiting hours will be held 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. A celebration of Lee’s life will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, at Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro, with the Rev. Michelle Grube officiating. Committal will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, at the Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta. Memorial donations may be made in Lee’s memory to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are entrusted to Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Waldoboro.
