UNIONVILLE, Conn. – Leo C. Murphy, 95, of Unionville, Conn., died Monday April 5, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Leo was born Aug. 17, 1908, in South Brewer, son of the late Donald and Martha (Lanigan) Murphy and graduated from Brewer High School, Class of 1926. He was a U.S. Army Air Corp veteran of World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946. He was a communicant at the Church of St. Ann’s in Avon, Conn. Leo was a longtime member of the Connecticut Bristol Old Tyme Fiddler’s Club as well as the Rhode Island Fiddler’s Club. Leo was a gifted musician. Over the years, he participated in numerous fiddling competitions winning several awards and trophies. During the National Bicentennial, Leo had the distinct honor of being selected to represent the state of Maine at the Folk Festival in Washington D.C. and was further honored by being asked to record select pieces of his music for the National Archives to be used for educational purposes. Leo is survived by his sisters, Alice Lytikainen Murphy of Unionville, Conn., and Teresa McHale of Bangor; as well as many loving nieces, nephews and close friends. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at the Church of St. Ann’s, Avon, Conn., Wednesday April 7. Burial will be private in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bangor.
