ROQUE BLUFFS – Leo James Preston Sr., 71, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, passed from this life and into the next on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008. His passing was due to complications from non-Hodgkins lymphoma. He was born Jan. 13, 1937, in Roque Bluffs, to Horace Sr. and Minnie (Morse) Preston. He was born and raised in Roque Bluffs and was educated in the one room schoolhouse there. Throughout Leo’s life, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and being on the water. He enjoyed being a fisherman and was happy to show his grandchildren how to hunt and fish. Leo was a quiet man by nature, however, when he spoke it was honest and to the point. He was a great cook as well. When his children were younger, often times you would see him and some of his children picking strawberries in the field to make a big batch of strawberries and cream. He also made a wonderful lobster stew that would put anyone else’s to shame. He was best known for his homemade custard and ice cream. These were the things that Leo enjoyed doing and putting smiles on the faces of his children and grandchildren. On Jan. 26, 1955, he married Margaret Ann (Wallace) Preston, whom he called “Mag.” In December 1955, they welcomed their first of seven children, Leo James Preston Jr. They would have celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary, Jan. 26, 2008. They shared many special memories of their life together and during the past few years enjoyed their travels to Foxwoods Resort and Casino. In addition to his wife, Margaret, he is survived by his children, Christopher Preston and wife, Sherry, of Machias, Cathy (Preston) and husband, Danny Bunker, of Hampden, Jamie Preston and Matthew Preston of Roque Bluffs, Beth (Preston) and husband, Thomas McCurdy, of Marshfield, and Kelly (Preston) and husband, Peter Economy, of Hampden; grandchildren, Michael Preston, Benjamin Bunker, Eric, Miranda and Eryn Preston, Megan and Grace Preston, Katelyn and Joseph McCurdy, and Samuel and Sara Economy; great-grandchildren, Lexus, Olivia and Jackson Bunker; Leo’s siblings, Alta Kilton, Adian Preston, Mina Preston, Gail St. Jock, Tyrone Preston Sr., Glen Preston Sr. and Vernon Preston Sr. He was predeceased by his eldest son, Leo James Preston Jr.; parents, Minnie and Horace Preston Sr.; and brothers, Horace Jr. and Bertman Preston Sr. A special thank you to the nursing staff at Eastern Maine Medical Center Oncology Unit, Hospice Care, and Community Health & Counseling. We are grateful for the care and support you provided to Leo and his family. A graveside service will be held in the spring.
