PULLMAN, Wash. – Leonard Edgar Porter, 69, died Oct. 29, 2004 at home with his family. He was born in New Limerick, to Oscar Byron Porter and Ina Ellen (Hand) Porter. He was valedictorian in the Houlton High School, Class of 1952. A retired colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and retired chairman of the Physics and Astronomy Department at the University of Montana, he had been Director of Radiation Safety at Washington State University since 1990. Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Maureen (Johnson) Porter; daughter, Laurie Maureen Porter and husband, Rick V. Adside, both LCDRs in the U.S. Navy in Hawaii; son, Leonard Emerson, U.S. Navy LT and wife, Lori, in San Diego; sister, Byrna Mae Porter Weir; two nieces; one nephew; uncle and wife, Ernest and Kay Hand; aunt, Phyllis Major Hand; and many cousins; two brothers-in-law and wives, Richard and Laura Johnson, and Charles and Joyce Johnson; a sister-in-law and husband, Mary and Glenn Stephenson; a stepgrandson; three nieces; five nephews; seven great-nephews; two great-nieces; and two great-great nephews. A church service was held in Pullman, and interment will be at Fort Rosencrans National Cemetery in San Diego. Donations may be made to any cancer research facility. <
