ORONO – Margaret Millard, 88, died Nov. 13, 2004, in Orono of Alzheimer’s disease. A physician and mother of six, she lived in Windham from 1958 to 1988 with her husband, the late Dr. Ben Millard. She was born Kathleen Margaret Agnete Harland in the British West Indies, where her father was a tropical biologist, and moved to England to attend school at age 12. She and Ben Millard married in 1943 after meeting at Bristol University. The family moved to Windham in 1958 when Ben was hired as a research chemist by the S.D. Warren Company in Westbrook. After working in general medicine for several years, Dr. Millard became board-certified in first anesthesiology and then pediatrics, opening Windham’s first pediatric practice in 1969. She was well known in the community for her tireless dedication, making frequent house calls until her retirement in 1981. A daughter, Bronwyn, and her husband, Ben, pre-deceased her. Surviving are three daughters, Frances of England, Katherine of St. Croix, and Julie of Albion; two sons, Max of San Francisco, Calif., and Peter of Orono; and seven grandchildren. She also leaves behind many friends and former patients who remember her as an energetic, intellectually gifted, and compassionate individual who was ahead of her time and never hesitated to speak her mind. A celebration of her life will be held 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, at the Colby College Alumni House.
