WATERVILLE – Leonard R. “Woody” Woods, 76, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, at a Bangor health-care facility. He was born June 16, 1927, in Romulus, Okla., the son of Houston J. and Charlcie D. Woods. Woody served in the U.S. Army from 1945-1949 as a clerk typist. In 1949, he entered the U.S. Air Force and served as an Air Force policeman until his retirement in 1966. Following his retirement from the Air Force, Woody worked for the Maine D.O.T. for several years before retiring in Sidney with his wife, Phyllis. Woody fell in love with the state of Maine while he was stationed at Loring Air Force Base. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, and was past Commander of American Legion Post No. 15 in Caribou. Woody loved his country and was always surrounded by American flags, eagles and other patriotic symbols. He spent hours cheering the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, and the members of the U.S. Military. Woody is survived by three children, Helen Woods, Leonard Woods Jr., both of California, and Ciecile Woods; four stepchildren, Michael Welch of New Hampshire, Rosland Smith of Sidney, Eric Welch of Madrid, and Michelle Rancourt of Waterville; a sister, Anna Mae Brown of Oklahoma; two brothers, Frank Woods of Shawnee, Okla., and Harley Woods of Pampa, Texas; 11 grandchildren, Dawne-Marie, Patrick, Tammy, Lisa, Kurt, Shawn, Richard, Adam, Sean, Amanda and Katelyn; eight great-grandchildren, Christian, Cameron, Isaac, John Jr., Caley, Rich, Cordell and Aidan; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Phyllis (Hanington) Woods; and a sister, Evelyn Morgan. Woody taught those who loved him to live one day at a time. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, at the Chapel at the Maine Veteran’s Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
