EAGLE LAKE and FORT KENT – Leopold “Paul” A. Pelletier, 78, husband of Leonette “Nanette” (Theriault) Pelletier, died Jan. 1, 2007, at a Bangor hospital from complications of a fall incurred Dec. 30, 2006, at his home. At the time of his fall, he was doing exactly what he loved to do, carpentry. He was born May 5, 1928, in Fort Kent, the son of Philip and Sophia (Cyr) Pelletier. Paul graduated from Fort Kent Community High School in 1949. He married the love of his life Aug. 16, 1950, in Wallagrass. At a young age, he worked on the farm owned by his mom and dad. Later, he worked and became well known for his master carpentry skills. He had built and worked on many homes in the Fort Kent area, as well as his own home, which he was working on the day that he fell. He became a very skilled and well-respected craftsman. He will always be remembered for his perfectionism in whatever he set out to achieve, and there were several accomplishments. The home he owned at Eagle Lake was his pride and joy. He spent many hours lovingly taking care of the property. He was active in the Cursillo movement and served as an Eucharistic minister at St. Joseph’s Church. He participated in numerous recreational activities throughout the years, including downhill, cross-country, water and trick skiing. He was instrumental in the conception and ultimate founding of the Lonesome Pike Ski Trials in Fort Kent. He spent many hours working on the premises and taking pleasure skiing with family and friends. He was also a charter member of the Fort Kent Golf Club. He volunteered numerous hours towards the Can Am dog sled races and the Maine Winter Sports Center, during the World Cup Biathlon competition. He also loved to bicycle and participated in several Tour de la Vallee bike tours supporting the Guy Paradis Cancer Fund. He was a skilled pilot and at one point in his life, he purchased a hand glider and was better known as the “Flying Frenchman.” He will be missed, especially by his family. His grandchildren knew him as “Pop.” He was always available for his children and grandchildren and very proud of all their accomplishments. That pride was instrumental in encouraging them to realize their own life achievements. In addition to his wife of 56 years, he is survived by one daughter, Caroline Cyr and her husband, David, of Van Buren; two sons, David Paul Pelletier and his wife, Beverly (Taggett) and Andrew Pelletier, all of Fort Kent; seven grandchildren, Abby Pelletier, Christine, Kenny and Philip Dube, Julia, Darrin and Andrea Pelletier; four sisters, Auror of Wallagrass, Estelle of Florida, Fabeolia “Bea” of Buffalo, N.Y., and Gloria of Montreal, Quebec; three brothers, Gerald “Gerry” of California, Don of Colorado and Lloyd of Arizona; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Cyr, Bern and Ted; and two sisters, Florence and Jeanine. At his request, there will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held noon Saturday, Jan. 13, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Soldier Pond. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may send memorial contributions to the Guy Paradis Cancer Fund, care of Northern Maine Medical Center, 143 East Main St., Fort Kent, ME 04743.
