WELLS – LeRoy E. Nightingale, 76, of Skyline Circle, died July 21, 2006, lovingly surrounded by his family, at his home. Roy was born Sept. 29, 1929, to Clyde and Beatrice (Gray) Nightingale in Grindstone. He attended schools in Grindstone, Portland and Bucksport High School where he graduated. He served in the U.S. Army for three years with the medics in Japan. Roy married Wyneta Conary in 1950, and later graduated from the University of Maine at Orono with his bachelor of arts and masters degree in guidance. Roy taught school for more than 30 years in Ellsworth, Patten, New Jersey, Lincoln and Bucksport. For the last 17 years of his career he was the guidance counselor at Schenck High School in East Millinocket. Roy’s love for his students far exceeded the classroom. Roy was a 32nd degree Mason of Horeb Lodge No. 93 AF & AM of Lincoln, Anah Temple of Maine, a member of the Penobscot Shrine Club, the Maine Guidance Association and served on many boards for the town of Lincoln. Roy was also a volunteer for the Ombudsman Program in York County. Roy enjoyed winters in Florida and summers in Maine, where many friends in both locations will miss him. His parents; his brother, Leslie; and sister, Louise Hanscom predeceased him. Roy is survived by his wife of 56 years, Wyneta; son, Terry and his wife, Nancy, of Newfields, N.H.; daughter, Denise and husband, Dick Gordon, of Portland; brothers, Clyde Jr. and Rodney and his wife, Elaine; sisters, Kay Gomm, Althea and husband, Tom Coleman, and Dawn and husband, Gene Ladd; and the five loves of his life, his grandchildren, Katie Nightingale and fianc?, Bill Zackeroff, of Goffstown, N.H., Jessica (Nightingale) and husband, Lance Glaser, of Haverhill, Mass., Nicholas Gordon and wife, Paige, of Portland, Nathan Gordon and fianc?e, Brandi Knight, of Topsham and Whitney Gordon and fianc?, Cpl. U.S. Marine Corps. Robert Miller, of Portland. “By the way” as his grandchildren always said, “You’re looking good LeRoy.” Also surviving are many special nieces, nephews; and one very special niece, Paulette Gomm. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, July 24, at the Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery with Pastor Gerry Dill officiating.
