OLD TOWN – Linwood A. Wickett, 95, of West Old Town, went home to be with Jesus, Monday night, Feb. 5, 2007, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Aug. 7, 1911, in Old Town, the son of William S. Wickett and Bertha (Carr) Wickett. Linnie worked at the WPA during his early years and became a fixture as a boiler man and fireman at the Old Town Canoe Co. from 1946 until 1983, his official retirement year at age 72. However, he still continued to work a few more years for Old Town Canoe and maintained his boiler license into his 90s, occasionally returning to add his expertise to the operation. In 2004, he was still running his John Deere tractor and baler on hot summer days. Linwood was well known for his love of farming, especially his pet, Hereford cows, his love of church and of hunting. He was still caring for his four head of cattle until very recent days. At the peak of his farming he cared for 28 head of cattle. His hard work and cheerful disposition kept “Linnie” going strong during his 95 years. His hunting stories abounded and often told to his family and friends. He also loved to tell his stories of his church experiences. He was a member of the Charleston Pentecostal Church for many years, until joining the LaGrange Full Gospel Assembly about five years ago, which is pastored by his nephew, Edward Costain. He and “Wifey” also loved trips to New Hampshire and this past summer returned for another trip to the top of Mount Washington on the Cog Train. He will be missed by his many friends and relatives. He is survived by his loving wife of 73 years “Wifey” Alice M. (Young) Wickett, they were married May 20, 1933. He is survived by his three children, Diane Bertrand and her husband, Frank Dale Bertrand, of Aiken, S.C., Arthur W. and his wife, Louise Wickett, of West Old Town, Linwood B. and his wife, Nancy Wickett, of Stratham, N.H.; six grandchildren, Deborah (Bertrand) and her husband, Joseph Camp, of Spartanburg, S.C., Denise (Bertrand) and her husband, Robert Johnston, of Lancaster, N.Y., Danielle (Bertrand) and her husband, Michael Hoffstatter, of North Augusta, S.C., Stephen Wickett and special friend, Janet Kemberling, of Brunswick, Mark Wickett and special friend, Vickey Willey, of West Old Town and Stephen and Mark’s mother, Beverly Clark of Bangor, Craig Wickett and his wife, Heidi, and Craig’s mother, Marilyn Harlow of Sacramento, Calif.; seven great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town. A celebration of his life will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at the LaGrange Full Gospel Assembly, Route 16, LaGrange, with his nephew, Pastor Edward Costain and Ronnie Libby of Souls Harbor, officiating. A spring interment will be held at West Old Town Cemetery, Old Town. Arrangements are entrusted to Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Linwood’s memory to the LaGrange Full Gospel Assembly, 4895 Bennoch Road, Lagrange, ME 04453.
