PUNTA GORDA, Fla. – Linwood “Lindy” Clinton Brown died peacefully Jan. 5, 2006, in Punta Gorda, Fla. He was born March 23, 1922, in Vanceboro, the son of Carrie May Mansfield and Ora Wallis Brown. Lindy graduated from Vanceboro High School in 1939. He served in the 82nd Bomb Squadron of the 10th Air Force during World War II, with the rank of staff sergeant, serving as a gunnery instructor and tail gunner aboard, Leggy Lady, a B-25 bomber. He flew 49 missions, 207 combat hours, in the CBI Theater in Burma, China and Thailand in 1944-45, for which he received the Distinguished Flying Cross. After the war, Lindy returned to Vanceboro, where he married Diane (Main) Brown. He began his life-long work for the railroad, first as a fireman and then as an engineer for Canadian Pacific and Maine Central Railroad. Lindy and Diane and their four children moved to Calais in 1962. Lindy was a past commander of the American Legion, Post No. 3, a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 46 and a member of the Anah Shrine Temple. He was a catcher and first baseman while playing semi-pro baseball in Canada throughout the 40’s and 50’s and for the Calais Mets in the late 50’s and early 60’s. He umpired Calais Little League baseball in the 60’s and 70’s. He retired in 1982, after 43 years on the railroad. In 1990, Diane and Lindy moved to Punta Gorda, Fla. He was predeceased by his parents and three older sisters, Martha Brown, Katherine Philbrick and Dorothy Little. Lindy leaves his cherished wife of 50 years, Diane; son, William Brown and his wife Sandy; daughter, Susan Christy and her husband, Dan; daughter, Lyn Brown and her husband, Mark; and son, David Brown and his wife, Donna; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, one niece and three nephews. Lindy loved his family, his many friends, the bagpipes, the Yankees and his Glenfidditch. He hopes all who knew him will have a taste of the good stuff in celebration of his life. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, at Burnt Store Presbyterian Church, in Punta Gorda, Fla., with the Rev. Timothy Stewart, officiating. A summer memorial service and internment will be held at the Vanceboro Cemetery.
