ELLSWORTH – Lucy May McCabe, 74, died unexpectedly Saturday, Aug. 18, 2007, surrounded by loving members of her family at a health care facility in Ellsworth. Born in Windham, she was the daughter of Harold and Beryl (Malier) Varney. She attended Durham School and Windham High School. She later went on to graduate from Oxford Hills High School in 1999. A longtime resident of North Waterford, Lucy took in and cared for many foster children through-out 40 years with her ex-hus-band, James McCabe of Stockholm. Lucy enjoyed singing, music, crocheting, knitting and sewing clothes for her children while they grew up. She won many blue ribbons from the fairs for items she made. She loved to care for her grandchildren and great-grand-children. She was a caregiver to many family and friends. In later years, she lost her eyesight and lived with a number of her children until 2004. She was predeceased by her parents; a grandson, Charles Hafner II; a foster child, Jackie Potwin; and brother-in-law, Philip MacDonald. Surviving Lucy are her 11 children, Thelma Sargent and her husband, Skip Cadett, of Rockwood, Luann and her husband, Dennis Corkins, of Gouldsboro, Delilah McCabe of Bridgton, Cheryl and her husband, Alan York, of Sanford, Jesse McCabe and his wife, Anita, of New Sweden, Charles McCabe and his wife, Ruvilyn, of Stockholm, Patti McCabe and her fianc?, David Miller, of North Waterford, Laura McCabe of Bridgton, John McCabe and his wife, Alda, of North Waterford, Heather Moody of Lewiston, Mindy and her husband, Bruce Burke, of Biddeford; and foster daughter, Jannie Billings of Norway; two sisters, Jennie MacDonald of Casco and Julia Cheney and her husband, Albert, of Lyman; and numerous nieces and nephews. Lucy was a devoted grandmother to 23, Troy and Jeffrey Sargent, Heather and Trisha Corkins, Edward and Charity Millett, Miles, James and Charly Hafner, Albany McCabe, Everett and Dakota McCabe, Elizabeth, Richard, Julie Barker and Sophie Miller, Whitney and Bradley Bartke, Jamie McCabe, Pamela, Allison, Tori and Evan Moody; and eight great-grandchildren, Dylan and Marshal Sargent, Desiree, Dominique, Gavin and Jazzy Millett, Nolan and Peyton Hafner. Our mother will be remembered as a great mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Family and friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 230 Main St., Norway, where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24.
