SEARSPORT – Lucy Nichols, 93, died Jan. 5, 2006, at Belfast. She was born June 24, 1912, in Everett, Mass., the daughter of Robert P. and Martha Jane (Ross) Nichols. Lucy is a 1930 graduate of Pawtucket, R.I. High School. She then went to Mt. Holyoke College for a Library Services degree in 1934, and Simmons College for a master’s degree in 1935. Lucy entered the library profession with employment at the University of Maine and Oswego, N.Y. Her long-time employer was the Lakewood, Ohio School System. She moved back to Searsport upon her retirement and lived in the family homestead. While in Searsport, she was very active with the Board of the Carver Memorial Library, The Women’s Fellowship of the Congregational Church and as a volunteer for The Penobscot Marine Museum. Lucy enjoyed sailing on the Penobscot Bay; often bringing her friends along for cruises with her parents on her father’s 38′ yawl “Pelican.” Lucy is survived by two brothers, Clark of Searsport, and Jackson of Phoenix, Ariz.; nephews, Dan of Rockville, Md., Ted of West Chester, Pa., Robert of Phoenix, Ariz., and Andy of Blue Hill; niece, Pam of Geneva, N.Y.; nine grandnephews and grandnieces, Michele of Geneva, N.Y., Elisabeth of Richmond, Va., Katie and Jeff of Rockville, Md., Steven and Jennifer of West Chester, Pa., Chris, Jason, and Beth all of Phoenix, Ariz. Lucy was predeceased by her niece, Megarte of Phoenix, Ariz. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, at the First Congregational Church of Searsport, with the Rev. Arlin Larson, officiating. The Women’s Fellowship Group will provide light refreshments after the service. Memorial donations may be made in her memory to the Carver Memorial Library, P.O.
