MORRILL – Lytle Wood, 93, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008, in Camden. She was born Nov. 10, 1914, on Paul Ranch, Searsmont, the daughter of Israel R. and Mertie L. (Howes) Woodbury. The family moved to a farm near Frye Mountain, Morrill, where she grew up. Lytle drove herself to school with a horse and buggy or sleigh every day. She graduated from high school at Freedom Academy. Lytle married Clarence A. Wood, Nov. 27, 1934. Six years of hard work and savings later, they bought the Berry farm in Morrill and carried on a dairy farm until 1968. They had a record setting herd of Holstein cattle. Lytle and Clarence drove the school bus for many years using a panel truck and later a station wagon. Farming is hard work with long hours, seven days a week, but Lytle and Clarence always had time for family, friends and the community. Lytle was a life-long member of the Grange. She was a charter member of Morrill 4-H and was a long-standing member of the Extension Service, the Law Enforcement Association, the Morrill Historical Society and held the cane as the oldest person in Morrill. Elected town clerk in 1969, she held this office until her retirement. As a notary public, she performed many marriages. Lytle was well known for her hooked and braided rugs and her paintings. She made her own clothes and enjoyed her flower gardens. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband of 54 years; and her brother, Royal Woodbury. Lytle has many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members who survive her. Family and friends are invited to call noon-1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, at Morrill Baptist Church where funeral services will begin 1 p.m. with the Rev. Richard Reynolds officiating. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations in Lytle’s memory to Waldo County Extension Service, 992 Waterville Road, Waldo, ME 04915. Arrangements are under the care of Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast.
