SOUTH CHINA – Marc Johnson, 62, died peacefully Nov. 29, 2006, at Maine General Hospital, after a long illness. He was born Feb. 11, 1944, in New Britain, Conn., to Arnold E. and Lenore Erickson Johnson. Marc went to high school in Southington, Conn. He graduated from the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Science in forestry in 1967 and from the University of New Hampshire with a Master of Science in forestry in 1971. He worked at Scott Paper Co., Waterville in 1971, in real estate and forestry, working his way up to become president of Skylark Inc. He retired in 1995 and started a forestry consultant business. He also became a historian of the log drives in Maine and was most proud of his efforts to photographically capture the essence of Maine’s last log drive on the Kennebec River from 1971 to 1976. He was proud of his memberships in the New England Society of American Foresters, whom he served as the Maine correspondent, Small Woodland Owners Association of Maine, Maine Woodcarvers Association, the American Tree Farm System, Maine Audubon, the Pine Tree State Arboretum, the Nature Conservancy and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. He loved the mountains, forest, wetlands and birds and was an accomplished photographer and woodcarver. He also believed in community service as the president of The China Historical Society, the Comprehensive Land Use Committee and the Town of China Forestry Committee for a number of years. He is survived by his wife, Holly Johnson; his brother and sister-in-law, Kurt and Jane Johnson of Southington, Conn.; Aunt Shirlee and Uncle Gordon Raymond of Southington, Conn.; his stepchildren, Curt and Melanie Eynon; granddaughter, Kimberly of Belfast and Sherry and Stanley Murphy; and grandchildren, Nick and Jace of Brooks. He gives thanks and appreciation to the staff of the Waterville Oncology Unit for all their help. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at the Pleasant Street Methodist Church, Waterville. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Marc may be made to the Marc A. Johnson Memorial Fund, a scholarship to benefit University of Maine forestry students.
