CARMEL – Margaret Ryder, 77, known to many as “mother” passed away Nov. 2, 2005, at a Bangor hospital, after a long illness. She was born Sept. 7, 1928, in New Sharon, the daughter of the late Oscar Delmont Spencer Sr. and Lillian Amy (Lawton) Spencer. Margaret graduated from Hampden Academy, Class of 1946, and married her husband, Erwin Ryder in 1947 and they were sealed together for eternity in the Logan Temple in Utah in 1966. They lived in Hampden for 17 years and later moved to Carmel in 1965. In their later years they owned and operated a convenience store and lunch counter called “Ryder’s Food Land” in Old Town. Margaret was a long-time active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where she spent a lot of her time doing genealogy work. Margaret was a kind, generous and very special person who is survived by and will be sadly missed by her husband of 58 years, Erwin Ryder of Carmel; children, Heber Asbury Ryder and wife, Serene, of Vassalboro, Linda Marie (Ryder) Foss and husband, Scott, of Carmel, Dennis Erwin Ryder and wife, Shelly, of Cummings, Ga. and Michael Berry of Salt Lake City, Utah; several grandchildren, Ryan (Foss) Rudolph, Seth Ryder, Derek Foss, Felicia Ryder, Brooklyn Sprague and Sarah Ryder; a great-granddaughter, Aydan Margaret Rudolph; two brothers, Delmont Spencer and wife, Jean, of Hampden and Jim Spencer of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Hazel Ryder and husband, Sheldon, of Hampden, Freda Wilcox and husband, Stacey, of Alton; many nieces, nephews, and many special friends, in particular, Hazel Thomas of Bangor, Vernon and Karen Carr of Old Town and Margarette Moore of Carmel. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A Funeral Service will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 7, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 639 Grandview Ave., Bangor, with Gordon McKenney, President, officiating. Interment will be at Highland Cemetery, Carmel.
