KITTERY – Margaret Mary Woodward, 83, of 17 Island Ave., Kittery, died July 27, 2006, at York Hospital. Born Oct. 6, 1922, in Utica, N.Y., she was the daughter of Bradford and Mary (Kirkwood) Manning. She attended the local Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School and graduated from New Hartford High School. During World War II, Margaret worked at the Rome New York Air Force Base as a civilian employee before relocating to the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., where she worked for the adjutant general’s office. In 1944, she married her lifelong friend, Albert Woodward; they grew up only a short distance from each other in New York and from the age of 10 were friends. Together they moved to Maine where they raised a family. She was a lifelong caregiver, first and foremost as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grand-mother. She started her career with the Visiting Nurses Association in New York and upon moving to Maine, obtained her nursing license and practiced at Tri County Hospital in Kittery and York Hospital for many years, retiring in 1984. After her retirement, she continued care for others, working per diem and private duty, as well as, caring for her son at home until his passing in 2000. She was always available to help and care for her friends and neighbors when they needed her. She enjoyed so much about Maine, the ocean and swimming in the waves, the start of summer at the Golden Rod on York Beach, the sandy beaches and her great love of lobster bakes with family. She dearly enjoyed her trips to Disney World; the enjoyment on the faces of her family brought her so much joy. She was a devout and faithful member of her church, St. Raphael Catholic Church in Kittery and enjoyed her support of a number of missions and programs in support of her faith. In her early years she was also active in her community in Utica. She started the Boys Club of America in Utica and worked with various other organizations in support of her community. Margaret is survived by her husband, Albert of Kittery; a son, Thomas Michael Woodward and his wife, Elizabeth, of Kingland, Ga.; two daughters and their husbands, Suzanne and Jeff Ilsley of Kittery and Mary Elizabeth and Gary Catapano of Brookline, N.H.; beloved grandchildren, Michael, Scotty, Jennifer, Joseph, David, Derrick, Shawn, Andrew, Connie, April and Krystal; and her great-grand-children, Brian, Nicholas, Michaela, Christina and Lauren. She was predeceased by her sons, Albert James and David Andrew Woodward; and her brothers, James and Leo Manning. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday, July 31, at St. Raphael Parish Church, Whipple Road, Kittery.
