VAN BUREN – The family of Margaret Patricia W. Cyr, “Pat,” is saddened to announce her passing Thursday, Sept. 6, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer. She passed peacefully with family by her side at Gosnell Memorial Hospice, Scarborough. Patricia was born Aug. 10, 1923, in London. At the age of 6, Patricia and her parents, Albert and Margaret (Crawford) Wood, immigrated to New Brunswick. Patricia spent her formative years in Edmundston, New Brunswick, and graduated valedictorian from her high school class. She enrolled at Mount Alison University, Sackville, New Brunswick, and the St. John General Hospital Nurses R.N. Diploma Program, graduating valedictorian. While teaching Fundamentals of Nursing at Edmundston Hospital, she met and fell in love with Thomas Cyr. She married Dec. 27, 1948, and resided in Van Buren. Working more than 20 years with MSAD 24, Mrs. Cyr was instrumental to health care education in Van Buren and Greater Maine. For many years she was an active member of the Alzheimer’s Association. For 10 years Pat was employed as the nurse admin-istrator of Borderview Nursing Home, Van Buren. She also worked to preserve early Childhood Education, Head Start, for disadvantaged children. This sparked her interest in community development, which became a passion of hers for the rest of her life. Later, she was devoted to the Abel Morneault Memorial Library, serving as secretary. Pat was extremely devout and passionate about her family, medicine, education – secular and religious, and the arts. As a feminist, she was a role model for her children, friends and neighbors. Mrs. Cyr will be remembered as always putting the needs and wants of her family and friends first. She enjoyed traveling abroad and had recently visited Ireland. For the last several years, she has been able to enjoy the warm ocean breezes of Hutchinson Island, Fla., during the winter months, but continued to reside at the family home in Van Buren. Thomas I. Cyr, her husband of 57 years, predeceased her in 2006. She is survived by her children, Margaret “Peggy” Cyr of Ottawa, Ontario, Elizabeth “Poppy” Hayden of Gray and Helen “Posy” Alves of Cumberland Center; three sons, Peter Charles Cyr and his wife, Patty, of Standish, Anthony J. Cyr and his wife, Lori, of Arvada, Colo., and Sean T. Cyr of Kings Beach, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Margaret Meyers of Cincinnati; and her 10 grandchildren, David, Rachael, Charlotte, Julia, Brittany, Elise, Alex, Anthony, Katie and Jenny. The family would like to express their deep gratitude to the nurses, doctors and staff at Gosnell Memorial Hospice, who cared for her with the compassion and devotion Pat had given to others. Relatives and friends may call 11 a.m. until time of service Monday at Ouellette-Thibault Funeral Home, 118 High St., Van Buren. A true and devout Catholic, Pat will be missed at St. Bruno-St. Remi Catholic Church, Van Buren, where a funeral Mass will be held 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10. Private interment will be in the family lot at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Edmundston, New Brunswick.
