BANGOR and HERMON – Retired Master Sgt. Louis James Zelko, U.S. Air Force, formerly of Hermon, died Sept. 6, 2007, at a Bangor hospital. He was born May 15, 1932, in Creighton, Pa., son of Peter J. and Frances A. (Wesoloski) Zelko. Louis was a 22-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving in the United States and overseas, retiring in 1972. After his military service, he was employed in the service deptartment of Sears & Roebuck Co., until his retirement in the mid-1980s. He loved cooking for family gatherings and was an avid gardener, wood worker and enjoying making gifts for family and friends in his garage. Surviving are his wife, Gayle A. (Moulton) Zelko of Bangor; three daughters, Louanne M. Zelko and her companion, John Worthley, of Hermon, Karen D. Quigley and her husband, Mark, of Levant and Nancy A. Jenkins of Brewer; three stepchildren, Dawn L. Call and her husband, Stephen, of Levant, Gary L. Giddings and his fiancee, Kathy Shedd, of Bangor and Ryne L. Giddings and his wife, Teresa, of Bangor; three grandchildren, Jessica L. Quigley of Levant, Benjamin E. Jenkins and Erik J. Jenkins, both of Brewer; two brothers, Robert and John Zelko; one sister, Gladys Kolata, all of New York; many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Zelko. The family wishes to thank the staff at Eastern Maine Medical Center Cardiac Care Unit for their exceptional care and their support to the family, which was outstanding. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Monday, Sept 10, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where a funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, with the Rev. Rick Lambert, pastor of Swanville Community Church, officiating. Interment with military honors will be held at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Hermon. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at Brookings-Smith Family Center, 163 Center St., Bangor, after the services Tuesday.
