PORTLAND – Marguerite Brown Petty Kilbride, a long-time resident of Portland, died at home Thursday, Sept. 23, surrounded by her loving family, after a brief illness. She was born May 31, 1928, in Abbott, to Joseph and Rebecca Petty. Marguerite moved with her family to Portland soon after her birth, and lived the majority of her life on Summit Street; initially growing up with her siblings and parents, and later on as a wife and mother of eight children. Marguerite graduated from Deering High School and the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. She was an obstetrical nurse with Mercy Hospital for more than 40 years. She was an instinctive caregiver in every role of her life. Regardless of the time of day, Marguerite always treated her constant stream of visitors as if she had all the time in the world. A cup of coffee would turn into two cups of coffee, a 15-minute visit into an hour’s visit. She made the time for each and every one of us, and by doing so, greatly enriched our lives. Marguerite was predeceased by Ernest, her husband of 43 years; her brother, Joseph; and her sister, Marilyn. She is survived by her children and grandchildren, Ernest Kilbride, wife, Mary, children, Ernest and Patrick of Carmel; Kerry Kilbride, wife, Elyse, children, Madison and Holden of LaCanada, Calif.; Rebecca Kilbride Googins, husband Ed, children, Jennifer, Jessica and Eddie; Beth Kilbride and daughter Molly, Tom Kilbride, wife Maria, children Erin, Marguerite, Seamus, Keegan and Chloe; Martha Kilbride Turner, husband Steve, children Benjamin, Samuel, Jeremy and Gabriel; John Kilbride, wife Julie, and son Jack; Rachel Kilbride, all of Portland. Marguerite also leaves behind her three very special sisters by marriage, Dorothy Petty, Sr. Elizabeth Kilbride, and Sr. Patricia Kilbride; and many relatives and friends. Visiting hours will be held 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Brooklawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Marguerite’s memory to The Smile Train, an organization that provides free cleft lip and palate surgery for children who would otherwise never receive it: The Smile Train, 245 Fifth Ave., Suite 2201, New York, NY 10016.
