BELFAST – Marguerite Dow McNeil, 89, of Belfast, died Sunday, Nov. 6, 2005, in Belfast. Marguerite was the daughter of Margaret E. and Michael J. McNeil. She was born March 8, 1916, in Brewer. She graduated from John Bapst High School in Bangor, the Eastern Maine Normal School in Castine, received her bachelor of science and master of science in education from the University of Maine, and her doctor of education degree from Columbia University. She taught elementary and secondary education in several schools in Maine, as well as teacher education in Aroostook State Normal School, Willimantic State Teachers College in Connecticut, and the University of Vermont. She retired as an associate professor from Brooklyn College, City University of New York. During World War II she joined the Women’s Army Corps., and served in General MacArthur’s headquarters in Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippines. She received an honorable medical discharge, having contracted a tropical skin disease while in the South Pacific. During her retirement years, she made many friends playing duplicate bridge in both Searsport and Bangor. She is survived by three sisters, Carolyn Talbot of Lafayette, La., Bertha Lundquist of Dorchester, Mass. and Barbara Marsanskis of Belfast; as well as a special niece, Nancy Lucas of Sydney, Australia; and a special nephew, Michael Prange of Yukon, Okla. She had dozens of nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews, who all referred to her lovingly as “Aunt Muggy”. She knew them all, and was very fond of each one. Marguerite was predeceased by her parents, three sisters, Hildred Prange of Portland, Inez Campbell of Searsport, and Annie McCarthy of Bangor; and one brother, James McNeil of Rockland. Her family wishes to thank sincerely the entire staff at Harbor Hill, who went far beyond the call of duty with their loving care. At her request, there will be no funeral services, but she will live on in the hearts of her family and friends forever. Arrangements are under the care of the Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast.
