OKLAHOMA CITY – Marguerite Palmer entered into rest peacefully Aug. 12, 2006, at her home. Born June 11, 1915, in Hampden, the third of four children to Eugene Smith and Lena (Remick) Smith. She graduated from Bangor High School in 1932 and Jean Sullivan School of Beauty. March 27, 1937, she married Paul D. Palmer of Brewer and remained at his side until his passing March 17, 1999. Their 62-year marriage was a model of devotion to her four children and their spouses, Richard and Jean of Ormond Beach, Fla., Patricia and James Meyers of Oklahoma City, Constance and Barry Burnham of Rome, N.Y. and Glenn and Kathryn of Augusta, Ga. Paul and Marguerite moved from Maine to upstate New York in 1953 and while in New York, raised their four children. Marguerite was a member of the Eastern Star Crystal Chapter 188 of Waterville, N.Y. They remained in upstate New York until their return to Searsport in 1989. While in Searsport they enjoyed running their antique and collectible glass business. In 1999, she moved into the Ellen Leach Home in Brewer, where she lived until April 2006, when she moved in with her daughter, Patricia in Oklahoma City. Marguerite, or “Gummy,” took great pride in being a full-time homemaker and throughout her many years, opened her home to her mother-in-law, Bertha Palmer, who lived with Paul and Marguerite for more than 27 years, as well as numerous relatives and friends in need. Survivors include her four children and their spouses; and her two sisters, Dorothy Hobden and Genevieve Gardiner, both of Bangor. She was predeceased by her brother, George W. Smith, who’s wife Eva Madeline, lives in Bangor. She also leaves 11 grandchildren, Holly, Richard, Edward, Donna, Laura, Steven, Lisa, Leanne, Christina, Dustyn and Chelsea; along with great- grandchildren, Adam, Chad, Kaitlyn “Mary-Alice,” Jesse, Reilly, Tanner, Travis, Hattie and Sara. Marguerite also has numerous nieces and nephews living in Maine and Massachusetts. Gummy’s great love of family and friends along with her extraordinary memory will be greatly missed. In time we will all be back together telling stories. A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Aug. 15, at United Methodist Church, First Church, 131 Northwest Fourth St., Oklahoma City. Burial will be performed in the early summer of 2007, at Oak Hill Cemetery, Brewer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ellen Leach Memorial Home, 58 Colonial Circle, Brewer, ME 04412.
