MACHIAS – The family of the late Marie Shaw mourns her passing, Dec. 28, 2005, at the Down East Community Hospital in Machias. She was in failing health for the past few years. She was 87 years old. Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in 1918, Marie was the daughter of Frank and Polly Burton. She graduated from Shaw Business College in Toronto and attended the Ontario College of Art. She joined the Royal Canadian Army and was stationed in Fredericton, New Brunswick, where she met and married her beloved husband, George Bernard “Bernie” Shaw. Together they lived in Mt. Stewart, Prince Edward Island, Shelburne and Halifax Nova Scotia, prior to moving to Maine in 1963. Marie had a life-long passion for all facets of drama. In Nova Scotia, she started the Cathedral Players drama group and was active in the Theatre Arts Guild. She designed and made costumes for several productions while she was employed at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. She was also active in productions at the University of Maine at Machias. The university was another one of the things she loved dearly. She was a student there from 1972 until 1991, graduating with several degrees. She not only loved being a student, but she thrived on her social life at the college and greatly enjoyed being with fellow students and faculty. Marie will be missed by many, but none more than her family. She was predeceased by her husband of 41 years, Dr. George Bernard Shaw. She is survived by three daughters, Margaret Shaw of Truro, Nova Scotia, Karen Nesbitt of Nepean, Ont. and Sandra Shaw and Michael Ross of Bar Harbor; three sons, George “Bob” and wife, Kye Ywan, of Belleville, N.J., Peter Shaw of Machias, and David Shaw and wife, Julie, of Rose Valley, Pa.; grandchildren, Shannon Driscoll, Kelly Driscoll, Matthew Nesbitt, Kagan Shaw, Michelle Ross, and Daniel Shaw, Brenden Shaw, Jenna Shaw and Krista Shaw. We love you; we will miss you and thank you for all you have done. Mother, rest in peace. A private family service will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Centre Street Congregational Church, P.O. Box 265, Machias, ME 04654, in Marie’s name.
