PRESQUE ISLE – Marilyn W. Dean passed away peacefully Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, at the Barron Center, Portland. She was born June 22, 1932, in Presque Isle, the daughter of Percy and Verna (Kneeland) Winslow. She attended Presque Isle Schools, Bates College and was a graduate of Chamberlain School of Retailing, Boston. In 1954 she married Perley M. Dean of Easton. She was employed by SAD No. 42, Mars Hill, was children’s librarian at Turner Memorial Library and was employed for 24 years as health sciences librarian at The Aroostook Medical Center, TAMC, retiring in 1994. She became a volunteer in the Oncology Clinic at TAMC Center in 1991 and served as community representative on Human Rights and Ethics Committee at TAMC. She was a member of the Maine Library Association, North Atlantic Health Sciences Libraries, Medical Library Association and was a charter member of Health Sciences Library and Information Cooperative of Maine, HSLIC. Formerly she served as a board member of the Central Aroostook Association for Retarded Citizens, Ward Clerk, member and chairman of the planning board and member of the Board of Assessment Review, all in Presque Isle. She also served as a trustee of Fairmount Cemetery Association and a member of Board of Voter Registration, Presque Isle. She was a longtime member of Grant Memorial United Methodist Church, having served as a trustee, co-super-intendent of church school and co-lay-leader. Marilyn was a knitter, gardener, avid reader and loved her family enormously. She loved spending time with friends and family. She had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh. She enjoyed writing letters and corresponding with friends, many of whom she had for more than 50 years. Perley Dean, her husband of 52 years, passed away March 2007. He lovingly cared for Marilyn for three years, keeping her at home after she suffered her stroke. After Perley passed away, Marilyn was a resident of the Barron Center, Portland, for 11 months. She is survived by a daughter, Debbie Coito of Yarmouth; two sons and daughters-in-law, William and Ann Dean of Scarborough and John and Lauri Dean of Gorham; five beloved grandchildren, Brian of Bellingham, Mass., Kimberly of Scarborough, Lindsay of Brighton, Mass., Andrew of Gorham and Melissa Coito of Yarmouth; one sister, Dorothy Drew of Burlington, Vt.; one brother and sister-in-law, Glen and Nancy Dean of Madison, Conn.; four nieces, one nephew and several cousins. Calling hours will be held 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, March 7, at Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, Presque Isle. A celebration of her life will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, March 8, at Grant Memorial Methodist Church, Presque Isle. Interment will be at Fairmount Cemetery later in the spring.
