LAMESA, Calif. – Marjorie Clarke Ackerman, 85, died of Alzheimer’s disease, Aug. 30, 2004, at LaMesa Calif. The daughter of Walter and Etta Clarke, Marjorie was born Aug. 3, 1919, in Hancock where she grew up on the Clarke family farm and attended the Mount Desert Ferry School. In 1937, she graduated from Bangor High School and in 1939 she went with her sister Ethel to the World’s Fair in New York. With a yearn to travel out of Maine, in 1941 she accompanied Mrs. Libby Crenshaw, for whom she worked on Hancock Point, and her three little daughters on a cross-country trip by car to San Diego, arriving just as Pearl Harbor was attacked on Dec. 7. Marjorie stayed on in San Diego, working as one of the celebrated “Rosy the Riveter” women who worked building airplanes for World War II at North Island. It was here that she met Jack Ackerman, originally from Los Angeles and after the war, they married and bought a house in LaMesa. They had two sons, David and Karl. Both Jack and Marjorie were very active in the LaMesa American Legion Post and for many years Marjorie worked in their popular thrift shop. Over the years the Ackermans made many return trips to Maine. In 1982, Marjorie attended her 55th Bangor High School class reunion that was held at the Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono. In 1998 she made her last trip home. Marjorie was predeceased by her husband, Jack in 1988, and her son, David in 1987. Marjorie is survived by her son Karl; one sister, Elizabeth Phippen of Hancock; one brother-in-law, Clayton Pomroy of Hancock; one sister-in-law, Lucille Clarke of Ellsworth; cousins, Delmont and Muriel of Brooks, and many nephews and nieces. She is also survived by several close friends in California. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at the Riverside Cemetery in Hancock,
