CALAIS – M. Phyllis Elliott, 89, died Feb. 22, 2005, after a brief stay at an Orono healthcare facility. She was born Jan. 23, 1916, the daughter of Henry V. and Robena (Whalen) Doucette. Phyllis had resided in Calais since 1956. Phyllis spent a happy childhood in Orono with her sister Robena and her brother John. She graduated from Orono High School in 1934. Before marriage and motherhood, she worked as a secretary at the University of Maine. Orono was always “home” to her. Phyllis lived life simply and with quiet dignity as a mother and homemaker. She devoted herself to raising her five children. As her children grew older, Phylis worked as the Fountain Manager at Newbury’s in Calais. Later she was the payroll clerk at Thos. Di Cenzo, Inc. and Down East Cable TV. At “retirement”, Phyllis taught herself how to quilt and made over 60 beautiful handmade quilts, which she gave as gifts to family and friends. Phyllis was a special individual with a strong faith in God and a positive attitude that stayed with her throughout her life. She was an active member of The Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church of Calais. Phyllis is survived by her brother, John Doucette and his wife, Betty, of Rockport, Mass.; four children, Robert Elliott and his wife, Ellen, of Dover-Foxcroft, Martha Whitehouse and husband, Philip, of Hampden, Elizabeth Odegaard and her partner, Bruce Bailey of Meddybemps, Kathleen Sera and her husband, Edwin, of Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two nieces. In addition to her parents, Phyllis was predeceased by her sister, Robena Burrill; her former husband, Robert P. Elliott Sr.; and son, Steven Elliott in 2003. Friends may call 3-5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, at the Scott-Wilson Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at The Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Calais, by the Very Rev. Mark Nolette, Celebrant. Fellowship and sharing will take place in the Parish Hall immediately following the service. Spring interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Orono. Whereas Phyllis so loved her pets, contributions in her name may be given to a Humane Society of one’s choice.
