GOTHENBURG, Neb. – Mark Francis Sawyer, 75, died Jan. 23, 2008, after a long illness. He was born Feb. 1, 1932, at Castine Community Hospital, to Francis James and Elizabeth (Hanscom) Sawyer of North Castine. He graduated as class salutatorian from Castine High School in 1951. He received a scholarship to Colby College, Waterville, from the New York Athletic Club through the late August C. Flamman of Castine and New York City, and graduated in 1956. He was married to the former Jean Witham of Castine and at the time of his graduation, they were the parents of three daughters. They are Toni Finn and husband, Don, of Fayetteville, Ark., Mona Price and husband, William “Page,” of Fort Worth, Texas, and Ruth White and husband, Dale, of Presque Isle. He is also survived by a stepdaughter, Lisa Moore of Southwest Harbor. After they divorced he was later married to Frances Charlene (Moore) Enos and they had a son, Steven Mark, who resides with his two children, Mark Francis II and Kimberly, in South Sioux City, Neb. He is also survived by a brother, Thomas of Foley, Ala.; and two sisters, Judith Wardwell Sandven of San Diego and Castine, and Mary Durgin Bartlett of Naples, Fla., and Castine; as well as two aunts, Patricia (Ordway) Hanscom and her late husband, Frederic, of Southington, Conn., and Patricia (Dennison) Hanscom and her late husband, George, of South Pasadena, Calif. He was predeceased by his parents; and a nephew, Michael Sawyer. A service was held in Gothenburg, Neb., with the Rev. Joe Sandven officiating. A graveside memorial service will be held in Castine in the summer.
