MARTIN A. BURNHAM ROCKLAND – Martin A. Burnham, 69, “Marty” passed away Thursday, March 30, 2006, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center, Rockport. His wife Caroline Turner Burnham, son Raymond “Skip” Burnham and daughter Sandra Billington were at his side. Marty was born Dec. 15, 1936, in Hartford, Conn., to Raymond Nelson Burnham and Beatrice V. Burnham. Marty graduated from East Hartford High School in 1955 and attended the University of Illinois. He enjoyed a successful career at East Hartford Federal Savings where he met and fell in love with his wife, Caroline, formerly of Bucksport. In 2001, they retired to Rockland. Marty was a vital member of his community, serving in town government as a member of the YMCA board and a member of the East Hartford Exchange Club. He was a tireless champion for the prevention of child abuse, helping to found the Exchange Club Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse, currently known as KidSafe. He is survived by his wife, Caroline; son, Raymond and daughter-in-law, Dianna; daughter, Sandra and son-in-law, Gary Billington; granddaughters, Victoria Rose Burnham, Abigail Ray Billington and Zoe Elizabeth Billington; grandsons, Evan Martin Billington and Gregory Merrick Burnham. Marty’s life will be celebrated 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 1-2, at the family home in Rockland. A memorial service will take place in Connecticut at a later date.
