BANGOR and DANVILLE, ILL. – Mary C. Davis, SFC retired, 88, passed away Feb. 26, 2007, at Maine Veterans’ Home, Bangor. She was born Oct. 6, 1918, in Danville, Ill., the daughter of Vance T. and Nina O. (Grigsby) Davis. Mary served in the U.S. Army from Aug. 12, 1942 to June 1, 1965. After her retirement from the military, she worked as manager of the Post Exchange, 5th Army Headquarters, Chicago. In April 1999 she relocated to Maine, where she spent time with her adopted Lewis family. She was a life member of the American Legion, Post 210, Danville, Ill.; a life member of the Veterans’ of Foreign Wars, Post 2378, Berwyn, Ill.; member of the Women’s Army Corps Veterans’ Association, Chicago Chapter 1; and a member of Daughters of Isabella Circle 209, St. Ann, Ill. She was a beloved member of the Kevlan Coffee Group, Bangor. She is survived by a life-long friend and caregiver, Betty-Lou Lewis; a nephew, Hubert Davis; nieces, Judith A. Starkey and Susan K. Roderick, and several great-nieces and great-nephews, all of Illinois, and many good friends. In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by an infant brother, Wendall; a brother, Harold G. Davis; and a lifelong friend, Adelaide R. Rubin. A graveside service with military honors will be held at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, 818 Wendt Ave., Danville, Ill., at a later date.
