HARRINGTON – Mary F. Worcester, 83, died Saturday, March 5, 2005, at an Ellsworth hospital. She was born March 2, 1922, in Harrington, the daughter of Milton R. and Myra E. (Moller) Perry Sr. Mary was a graduate of Harrington High School, Class of 1938. On Valentines Day, 1942, she married Wilbur W. Worcester of Columbia Falls. During World War II, while her husband was overseas, Mary moved to Portland and worked in a shipyard. After the war, Mary and Wilbur moved to Columbia where they owned and operated Hanson’s Clothing Store and Wib’s Market. In 1967, Mary became the full time postmaster of the Harrington Post Office, a position she filled for 20 years, before retiring. In 1978, she was honored as Postmaster of the Year. She was a past president of the Maine Branch of the National League of Postmasters, and was the only postmaster from Maine to serve as national vice president of that organization, based in Washington, D.C. Mary traveled across the U.S. during her service to the National League of Postmasters, making friends wherever she went. Mary was a lifetime member of Osceola Grange No. 570 in Harrington, also Alcyone Chapter No. 71, O.E.S. in Milbridge, and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Cherryfield. She served the town of Harrington in many capacities, and was a member of the school board which formed Union No. 37. Mary was a member of the Advent Christian Church in Harrington. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and quilting. Mary also worked beano, food, and craft sales as fund raisers for the Grange, church, and Senior Citizens Club. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Wilbur W. Worcester Sr., of Harrington; a son, Wilbur W. “Skip” Worcester Jr., and his wife, Cheryl, of Bangor; a daughter, Susan Bagley and her husband, Charles, of Gouldsboro; a sister, Rachel Leighton, Milbridge; a daughter-in-law, Frances Worcester of Columbia Falls; seven grandchildren, P.J., Angela, Kathleen, Jessica, Jason, Ralph, and Corinne; nine great-grandchildren, Phoenix, Paige, Rebecca, Trevor, Joshua, Jesse, Erin, Amanda, and Charles; two great-great-grandchildren, Jacob and Autumn; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mary was predeceased by her parents; a brother, Milton Perry Jr.; a sister, Leah Parker; a grandson, Chucky Bagley; and a great-granddaughter, Cady Lyn Bagley. Friends are invited to visit with the family 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, at the Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 47 Main St., Milbridge. Graveside funeral services will be held in the spring at Mailley Hill Cemetery, Columbia.
