LINCOLN – Mary P. Grindell, 87, wife of the late Francis Grindell, died Dec. 26, 2005, at her home. She was born June 16, 1918, in Olamon, the oldest daughter of Annie (Harriman) Page and William Sibley Page. Mary attended school in Olamon for six years and then moved to Lincoln. She lived in Lincoln until she passed away. She was a Girl Scout and in the 4-H Club, in which she won several county and state championships. She graduated from Mattanawcook Academy with honors. In high school, she played basketball, played in the orchestra and was student librarian for two years. She then attended Farmington State Normal School and the University of Maine. She was a member of the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, Cornell Lab of Ornithology in Ithaca, N.Y., the Maine Audubon and National Audubon Societies, the Lincoln United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was Past Matron of the Eastern Star and had an office for 10 years. She and her husband, Francis, owned and operated the Lincoln Clothing Co. for more than 40 years. Mary was the first president of Lincoln Business and Professional Women. In the 1960’s, she was chosen as Woman of the Year. She took many senior citizens out to eat and on trips. She entertained friends and relatives at the cottage. She cooked dinners for all the guests. She liked to play bridge and card games. She enjoyed going to Senior Citizens in Burlington and Lowell. She liked classical music. She used to raise hybrid tea roses. At one time she had 40 tuberous begonias on the north side of the garage. She loved sewing and cooking. She had a great sense of humor. Her favorite quip was, “We are here to help others, what are the others here for.” She is survived by a sister, Ella Cobb and her husband, Kenneth, of Lincoln and Tucson, Ariz.; two nephews, Owen L. Page and his wife, Veda, all of Lincoln and Allan Cobb and his wife, Mary, of Hiram; a niece, Frances Grindell of Hamden, Conn. Graveside services will be held in the spring at the Lincoln Cemetery.
