ORONO and LAMOINE Mary Spaulding Dickey, 80, wife of the late Herbert R. Dickey Jr., died June 9, 2004, at a Bangor healthcare facility. She was born July 18, 1923, in Princeton, the daughter of Earl and Esther (French) Spaulding. Mary grew up in Princeton, Bangor, and in Hampden Highlands and attended Princeton Elementary, Hannibal Hamlin School, Bangor High School and graduated from Hampden Academy in 1941. She graduated from Nasson College in 1945, with a BS in home economics. She was published in Who’s Who among students in American Colleges and Universities. Mary later attended University of Maine at Orono and obtained a Maine Teacher’s Certificate in 1970. She taught in the Orono and Veazie Elementary Schools for many years. Mary was a trustee and active member of the Orono Methodist Church. She was a member of United Methodist Women and the church choir. Mary volunteered in community work all her life. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother, a member of the Orono PTA, the Orono Health Council, Orono Public Library where she was a Trustee from 1965-1975, and she was a Orono Election Clerk for many years. Mary was a member of the Penobscot Valley Nasson Club. She was a 50-year member of the Esther Eayres Chapter of DAR and held many offices, including Regent. She was past president of and an active member of the PEO Sisterhood, Chapter B. Mary was an active supporter of the Maine Center for the Arts and the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. Her love of nature made her participation in the Bangor Nature Club especially enjoyable. She served in many capacities during her membership in that organization. Mary enjoyed playing cribbage, bridge, hearts and serious Scrabble game matches with family and friends. She enjoyed her Orono family home of 52 years, her cottage in Lamoine and traveling, and sailing between Mount Desert Island and Penobscot Bay. Mary spent many winters in Dunedin, Fla., enjoying an active social life with her many friends and family members. In addition to her parents and her husband of 36 years, Mary was predeceased by her sister, Margaret S. Brooks in 2003; and her brother, David W. Spaulding in 1994. She is survived by five sons, Herbert R. Dickey III and his wife, Brenda, of Topsham, Charles S. Dickey and his wife, Happy, of Hampden, Peter E. Dickey and his wife, Tommie Ann, of Lamoine, Thomas A. Dickey of Eustis, William D. Dickey and his wife, Tammy, of Lamoine; eight grandchildren, Tonya, Joel, Jacob, David, Michelle, Adam, Kristien and Willy; and five great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Diane Spaulding; as well as several nieces and nephews and cousins. The family would like to acknowledge and thank Mary’s niece and namesake, Mary Margaret Brooks, for her special care during Mary’s illness. Friends may call 3-7 p.m. Sunday, June 13, 2004, at Brookings-Smith, Labeau Chapel, 72 Main St., Orono. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, June 14, at the United Methodist Church, 36 Oak St., Orono, with the Rev. Terence McKinley, pastor and the Rev. Ronald Walden, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments following the services Monday to the Church’s Fellowship Hall.
