BLUE HILL – Mary T. Slaven, died peacefully June 17, 2004, at her home in Blue Hill. She was born March 18, 1909, in Greenwich, Conn., the daughter of John and Elizabeth Rohan Tobin. She graduated from St. Mary’s in Greenwich, Conn., and shortly after went to work for Lanier Co., one of the first Real Estate offices in Greenwich. She married Ellis A. Slaven and after summering in Blue Hill, moved there in 1946. Mary sold real estate for more than 50 years and it was her life. She belonged to the Realtors from the time it was organized in Hancock County. Mary was the first woman on the Board of the Union Trust Company and was also on the Board of the Maine Coast Memorial Hospital for several years. She was a supportive active parishioner of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Ellsworth. She served on several committees including the Capital Fund Campaign and was a member of the Women’s Council. Mary was an avid knitter and many people benefited from her handy-work. She is survived by her son, Ralph and his wife, Ernestine, of Blue Hill; grandchildren, Deborah A. Jackson of California, Teri B. Slaven, Ralph E. Slaven Jr. and his wife, Kim, Tobin D. Slaven and Harley E. Slaven, all of Blue Hill, Shawn and Tane of Washington State, John, of Florida, Andrea of Georgia; three great-grandchildren; Joelle, Torey and Duke, all of whom knew her as “Grand Mary,” and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Ellis; her son, Commander John Knowles Slaven; three brothers, Lawrence, Gerard, and Edward Tobin. Mary will be truly missed by her family and many friends Services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, June 21, 2004, at the Jordan-Fernald Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, with a reception following at the funeral home.
