NEWBURGH – Maurice Alfred Martin Sr., 82, husband of the late Helen (Drinkwater) Martin, passed away Jan. 19, 2004, after a long illness, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Aug. 10, 1921, in Lamoine, the son of Charles M. and Zelma (Walker) Martin. Maurice lived most of his life in Newburgh, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Over the years Maurice had worked as a custodian at the Federal Building in Bangor, in construction, trucking and farming. He loved to farm vegetables, and that was his life. He not only made a living at farming, by selling his produce at vegetable stands and farmers markets, but it was also what he enjoyed most. Maurice is survived by three sons, Maurice A. “Marty” Martin Jr. of Newburgh, Wayne Leslie Martin of Newburgh, and Allen Lee Martin and his wife, Judy, of Brownville Jct.; one brother, Charles Martin and his wife, Arlene, of Frankfort; two sisters, Beatrice “Betty” Martin of Old Town, and Esther Bray of Ellsworth; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Martin of Levant, Laura Martin and Charlotte Martin, both of Kenduskeag; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Helen, in 1993; a grandson, Maurice A. “Buddy” Martin III in 1990; and three brothers, Richard, Alton and Donald Martin. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, where a funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. Dick Woehr officiating. Interment in the springtime will be in Hill Cemetery, Newburgh.
