NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – Prudence Speirs Virgin, 78, died Jan. 16, 2004, at a hospice facility in Port Orange, Fla. She was born April 24, 1925, in Bangor, the daughter of Garrett D. and Prudence (Robinson) Speirs. In her younger years, Prudy was active in the Girl Scouts and became a Junior Maine Guide. She graduated from Bangor High School in 1943, where she was elected to the Girls Athletic Honor Council and the National Honor Society and excelled in her studies. She attended Simmons College and the University of Maine, working there as a foods researcher and graduating from the U of M in 1947, with a degree in home economics. At various times in her life she lived in Brewer, Manchester and New Smyrna Beach, Fla. Prudy loved listening to classical music, walking on the beach, sewing and shopping for and preparing healthy meals. While living in Brewer, she volunteered at the YWCA and was a member of All Souls Congregational Church, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She was a moderate activist for a clean environment and an avid reader. Prudy was a partner with her husband, Howard and kept the books and helped manage his several business endeavors. She worked for many years as a volunteer at the New Smyrna Beach Library and with the Harris House theater group. She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Howard of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; a daughter, Ann Virgin of Farmingdale; a grandson, Josh Virgin in the U.S. Army; two stepsons, Michael Virgin of Phoenix, Ariz., and David Virgin of New Zealand; two stepdaughters, Gayle Virgin of Edgewater, Fla., and Melissa King of Winthrop; ten other grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; a twin brother, Robinson Speirs and his wife, Elizabeth, of Bangor; a sister-in-law, Margaret C. Speirs of Bangor; a cousin, Jean Muller of Charlotte, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, David; and a brother, Garrett D. Speirs Jr. There will be no funeral services and Purdy’s ashes will be spread along the beach at New Smyrna. Phoenix Cremation, South Dayton, Fla. in charge.
