NEWPORT – Max Matijczyk, 86, died Dec. 25, 2007, at Sebasticook Valley Hospital. He was born Aug. 15, 1921, in Chicopee, Mass., a son of Maryan and Bulbina Matijczyk, both of Poland. Max served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre. He was later stationed at Dow Field in Maine, where he met and married his loving wife, Evangeline. Max was a life member of Corinna Post No. 73, American Legion and a member of Corinna United Methodist Church. He was an active member and much involved in the preservation and care of the North Newport Church. He was a master furniture maker and many of his projects are enjoyed by people in the area. In his retirement years, he took great pride in maintaining his land. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Evangeline (Gray) of Newport; son, Max A. and wife, Yvonne Matijczyk; daughter, Marie and husband, Malcolm Hartsgrove; granddaughter, Katrina and husband, Eric Domnissey; two grandsons, Matthew Matijczyk and special friend, Lisa Joakimides and Jason and wife, Annette Matijczyk; step-grandsons and families, Craig and wife, Jennifer Hartsgrove, and Scott and wife, Kendra Hartsgrove, and Ryan; sister, Helen Matijczyk; and two “adopted” grandchildren, Jackie and Timmy Sawtelle. Max was predeceased by his brothers, Albin, Adolph, Frank and John; and sisters, Olga, Sophie and Celia. The family says a special thank-you to those people who helped keep Max in his home since his stroke in 2005. A memorial service will be announced by Crosby & Neal, Newport.
