NEWBURGH – Maxine E. (Downes) Leavitt, 79, wife of the late Leon H. Leavitt, died Nov. 3, 2004, at a Bangor healthcare center surrounded by her family. She was born Dec. 7, 1924, in Bangor, the daughter of Oden C. and Bernice (Nealley) Downes. Maxine was a 1942 graduate of Hampden Academy and the Northern Conservatory of Music. She taught music in the Millinocket School Dept. and Higgins Classical Institute in Charleston. She was involved in her community and was a former member of the First United Methodist Church, Brewer, was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Grange. For many years, she was active in town government and the Parents Teachers and Friends Assoc. Known for her cooking, singing and playing the piano, she also enjoyed playing cards and camping. She adored her children and grandchildren. Surviving are four children, Kimberly L. Leavitt and friend, Brian Hansen of Brewer, Frank L. Leavitt and his fianc?e, Joanne Reinzo of Newburgh, Lisa M. Leavitt and Rob St. Louis of Carmel, Brett C. Leavitt and his wife, Vicki of Newburgh; five grandchildren, Katrina and Heather Bodge, Bethany Leavitt, Rogan and Gabriel Winch; a brother-in-law, Norris Leavitt of Newburgh; a sister-in-law, Christine Newcomb of Bangor; several nieces and nephews; special cousins, Dick and Neta Goodell. She was predeceased by a brother, Vernon Downes. Friends may visit 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, where a funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, with the Rev. Tracy Reeves, officiating.
