EAST MACHIAS – Maxine Grant Huntley, 79, died Oct. 19, 2006, surrounded by her loving family, at her home in East Machias. She was born May 18, 1927, in Cherryfield, the daughter of Stanley and Fredda (Bunker) Grant. Maxine grew up at the fish hatchery by Tunk Pond, where she and her brother developed a great interest in nature. She graduated valedictorian from Cherryfield Academy, 1944 and was a graduate of Washington State Teachers College, 1947. She taught elementary school in East Hartford, Conn., and in Maine for a number of years. Maxine married William Treat December 1949. After her husband died, she and her sister, Patricia, ran the Black Shutter Inn, Cherryfield, until she married Lewis Huntley August 1965. In the following years she spent most of her time raising her four boys. In 1985 she graduated magna cum laude from the University of Maine – Machias, the same year that her son, Stephen graduated from University of Maine – Machias as well. Maxine belonged to the East Machias Extension Club, Retired Teacher’s Association and East Machias Historical Society, all of which she enjoyed immensely. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church of East Machias. Maxine loved flower gardening, painting, crafts of all sorts and bird watching. Maxine is survived by her beloved husband of 41 years, Lewis Huntley of East Machias; three sons, Stephen B. Treat and his wife, Jacquelyn, of Memphis, Tenn., Newell S. Huntley and his wife, Kraisri, of Houston, Edward L. Huntley and his wife, Terri, of Surry; two precious granddaughters, Jana M. Treat and Victoria Huntley; two special grandsons, Joshua and Adam Treat; great-grandchildren, Victor and Kayla Morales and Emma Franz; grandchildren, Heather Bracco, Melanie Plank, Justin Plank and James Rose; one brother, Fred Grant and his wife, Barbara, of Cherryfield; special sister-in-law, Karen M. Grant of Columbia Falls; special niece, Cynthia Curtis and her husband, Garry, of Cherryfield; special great-niece, Angela Hall of Tenants Harbor; several other nieces and nephews; special cousins, Christine Small of East Machias and Evelyn Dorr of Machias; and many special friends and loved ones. Maxine was predeceased by her first husband, William H. Treat; son, Richard W. Treat; sister, H. Patricia Newenham; brother, Dennis S. Grant. Friends may visit with the family 10 a.m.-noon Monday, Oct. 23, at the Downeast Baptist Church, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. with Rick Ramsdell officiating. Interment will be held after at Pine Grove Cemetery, Cherryfield. Friends who wish may make gifts in Maxine’s memory to Downeast Baptist Church, 52 Outer Dublin St., Machias, ME 04654.
