HANCOCK – Maynard L. Foss, 92, died Feb. 14, 2006, in Ellsworth after a brief hospital stay. He was born Dec. 10, 1913, in Hancock, the son of Ivory H. and June (Crabtree) Foss. Maynard began his education in Hancock’s two-room schoolhouse and then attended Higgins Classical Institute. In his younger days he was active in baseball and basketball. He was a talented member of the Ellsworth baseball team and a lifelong Red Sox’s fan. He was one of the first people to ride across the old Hancock-Sullivan “Singing” Bridge at its dedication in 1923 and served as a grand marshall during the August 2000 dedication of the new bridge. He served as town selectman and as a trustee and deacon of the Union Congregational UCC Church. He has been the unofficial “town photographer” recording many town and church events for posterity. Maynard and his barn were a center of activity for preparing the annual church fair. He received the Hancock Citizen of the Year award in 1997. In his later years he could often be seen in his garden or riding his lawn tractor around the old Foss homestead. He truly lived his life by the Golden Rule.
