BANGOR and ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – Melvina (Howie) John, 98, wife of the late Mitchell F. John, a resident of Bangor for 70 years, died Aug. 29, 2004, at the Health Center of Daytona Beach, Fla. For the past seven years, she made her home with her daughter, Dorothy J. Christmas in Ormond Beach. She was born July 14, 1906 in Shweir, Lebanon. Melvina was an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church of Bangor, the Altar Guild of the church, Tuscan Chapter No. 148 O.E.S. of Bangor, Bangor Women’s Club and Bangor Nature Club. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and needlework. Friends and family appreciated her vibrant personality and sense of humor. Above all, she loved her family and will be remembered as a devoted mother and grandmother. Surviving are one son, Walter John and his wife, Ann of Boxborough, Mass.; a daughter, Dorothy (John) Christmas of Ormond Beach, Fla.; five granddaughters, Betsy Martin of Londonderry, N.H., Kathy Clements of Tampa, Fla., Nancy Christmas Howe of Alexandria, Va., Kimberly Christmas of Hillsboro, Ore., Peggy Hester of Windemere, Fla.; two great-granddaughters, Sydney Martin of Londonderry, N.H., Chelsea Hester of New York, N.Y.; and a great-grandson, Abbott Howe of Alexandria, Va. Friends may call 4-6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, French St., Bangor, with the Rev. Kevin Holsapple, rector officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Bangor.
