STOCKTON SPRINGS – Merilyn Anne (Ellis) Smith, 77, died peacefully Feb. 26, 2007, surrounded by her family at a Belfast hospital. She was born Dec. 17, 1929, in Stockton Springs, the daughter of Merrill and Alice (Verrill) Ellis. After graduating from Stockton High School, Merilyn worked at various jobs, including at Waldo County General Hospital, before marrying Herbert Smith of Stockton. She was active in many community organizations, including Boy Scout Troop 235. During this time, she received the Silver Beaver award, the highest honor a volunteer can receive. Merilyn was also a member of the Sandy Point Congregational Church, the Sandy Point Community Club, the MSAD 56 Board of Directors, and she held many positions in town government, including serving several years as health officer, plumbing inspector, telephone operator and selectman. Merilyn is survived by five sons, Charles and Cindy, of Fairbanks, Alaska, Merrill “Skeet” and Sandra of Searsport and Morrill, William and Julie of Flagstaff, Ariz., Shawn and Karen of Sandy Point and Malcolm of Sandy Point; grandchildren, Leslie of Alexandria, Va., Cameron of Fairbanks, Alaska, Hannah and Sarah of Flagstaff, Ariz., Timothy and his mother, Joy, of Searsport and Marsha, Bonnie and Brandon; one brother, Eugene Ellis of Stockton; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents, husband; and brothers, Merrill and Fred Ellis. Visiting hours for family and friends will be held 5:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, March 1, at Sandy Point Congregational Church, Sandy Point, with the Rev. Ruth Martin officiating. Spring interment will be at Sandy Point Cemetery.
