HARTLAND – After a long, productive and happy life, Merrill Hubbard, 62, died peacefully Sunday, Oct. 29, 2006, with family members by his side at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Mel was born March 6, 1944, in Hartland, at Scott Webb Memorial Hospital. He was the son of Edward and Ina (Field) Hubbard. He attended Hartland Academy before joining the U.S. Air Force and then later, the Army National Guard. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force and Army National Guard. He was employed as a truck driver in New Hampshire and Maine for many years. He was last employed by Frank Woodworth Construction, Pittsfield. Mel was a member of the American Legion and Fraternal Order of Eagles, FOE. He was an avid race fan, who never missed an opportunity to watch NASCAR/ Busch Race. He helped many race teams in Maine and New Hampshire. He could often be found in the pits and grandstands of Unity Raceway. He was a dedicated husband, father and very proud grandfather. He never left home without several pictures of his grandchildren to show to everyone he met. He was also actively involved in their scouting, church and school activities. In addition to his parents, Mel was predeceased by two sisters, Ruth Hubbard and Edrie Jean Hall; two nephews, Craig and Kevin Hall; first wife, Alice Ladd; and his brother-in-law, Jerry Towle. He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Karlene (Horton) Hubbard and their daughters, Alice Hewins and her husband, Bruce, Karla Sisco and her husband, James; two grandsons, Brandon Fuller and Brice Hewins; four granddaughters, Harvest and Brooke Sisco and Ashley and Abigail Hewins; a brother, Chet Hubbard and his wife, Patricia; a sister, Carlene Towle; five nieces, Kelly (Hubbard) Kelley, Loreen (Towle) Pelletier, Carla (Towle) Allen, Denise (Towle) Davidson and Tressa (Towle) Tabares; one nephew, William Hubbard; several great-nieces, great-nephews and stepchildren from both marriages. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, at Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield. An interment service will be held after the service at Pine Grove Cemetery, Hartland. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made in his name to Girl Scout Troop No. 142 or Cub Scout Pack No. 404. These donations may be sent to Chet Hubbard, 75 Garth St., Newport, ME 04953. Mel was well loved and highly regarded by many friends and acquaintances.
