SURRY – Merton Leigh “Bud” Pottle, 81, died Dec. 14, 2005, at a Bar Harbor hospital. He was born Dec. 18, 1923, in Eastport, the son of Leigh Austin and Bernice (Davis) Pottle. Bud graduated from Machias High School in 1941. He served in the European Theatre during World War II earning the rank of staff sergeant with the 66th Infantry Black Panther Division of the U.S. Army. He worked in the petroleum industry for many years, retiring from Getty Oil as a marketing representative in 1976. He was an outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. In his retirement he enjoyed his produce stand near his home on the Surry Road where good conversation with his customers was utmost. Bud was a member of the Lygonia Lodge No. 40, A.F. & A.M. and received his 40 year pin in 1995. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Maxine; daughter, Susan E. Merrill and husband, Robert; son, Kevin W. Pottle and companion, Tricia Ellis; the light of Bud’s life, grandson, Jarrod W. Leyendecker, all of Ellsworth; sister, Frances Hatt of Machias; brothers, Cecil Pottle and wife, Lorraine, of Ellsworth, Dale Pottle of Whiting; sister-in-law, Winona Bradbury; brothers-in-law, Colon Haskell and Peter Sawyer, all of Milbridge; nieces, nephews and many friends.
