SCARBOROUGH – Merton A. Nickerson, 64, died Jan. 12, 2006, at Maine Medical Center in Portland. He was born March 21, 1941, in Belfast, the oldest son of Joseph and Avis (Norton) Nickerson. He attended schools in Saco and held a bachelor of education from the University of Maine at Orono, a master’s of physics from the University of Northern Iowa and a doctorate in physics from the University of Maine at Orono. He has worked for the University of Maine System for 35 years, including the last 19 years as the Director of Academic Computing at the University of Southern Maine. He has been a well-known and respected leader in the Information Technology community throughout the University of Maine System. Merton is survived by his wife of 45 years, Ruth E. (Lane) Nickerson; his mother, Avis Bradstreet of Saco; his brother, Winston of Augusta; and three sons, Scott and wife, Linda, of Old Town, Keith of Saco and Steven and wife, Debbie, of Gray. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Sarah and Elexa Nickerson of Old Town and Meghan, Lucas and Logan Nickerson of Gray. In fulfillment of his wishes there will be no public services held.
