PORTLAND – Michael H. Smith, 42, of Forest Park, died unexpectedly Sept. 13, 2006, at his home. He was born in Bangor, a son of Floyd Donald and Virginia Claire McAttee Smith. Michael was educated in the Falmouth and Brewer schools, and was a graduate of Brewer High School. He also graduated from the University of Maine – Orono, majoring in political science and was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He continued his studies and received his law degree from Vermont Law School, South Royalton, Vt. Michael was a member of the Maine Bar Association and began his law career in central Maine with the firm Wheeler and Arey. He came to the Portland area in the 1990s and worked at MEMIC. He most recently was an attorney with the Hanover Insurance Co., Portland specializing in litigation and workman’s compensation. Michael was a true historian since childhood. Michael knew music trivia, sports and historical world events, artists, dates, times and who hit the home run to win the World Series in any given year. For sure, you wanted to be on his team playing Trivial Pursuit. In addition to being an avid Red Sox fan and getting on the golf course any chance he could get, the Patriots were part of his life. He was a longtime season ticket holder for the Patriots with his sister, Debbie. Michael and Debbie’s outstanding tailgate party culinary delights would win any award for the best salads, grilled food and delicious beverages. One recent highlight with the Patriots included the opportunity to participate in a team trip, and travel on their jet with them to Phoenix and a personal pre-game meeting on the field with Patriot’s team owner, Robert Kraft. Those who knew Michael knew that if you could not reach him in Maine he was enjoying another favorite pastime, Las Vegas, where he took many trips annually. He chose to celebrate the big event of his 40th birthday in Vegas with his brothers and sisters. He was predeceased by his mother in 1999. Surviving are his father of Lakeland, Fla.; two brothers and two sisters, Sally R. Norton of Cape Elizabeth, Deborah F. Smith-Walker and husband, Floyd, of Cape Elizabeth, Gregory F. Smith of Cape Elizabeth and Christopher P. Smith of Aruba; four nieces and nephews, Christopher P. Norton, Shannon, Cameron and Meghan Smith, all of Cape Elizabeth. Visiting hours will be held 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, South Portland.
