BAR HARBOR – Mildred “Bud” Maker Beam, 82, died April 9, 2006, at Birch Bay Village, after a stubborn battle with Alzheimers. She died surrounded by her loving family and devoted caregivers. Bud was born May 6, 1923, in Cutler, the daughter of Arthur Lee and Corice Minnie (Aldrich) Maker. Bud grew up in Cutler and graduated as salutatorian from Washington Academy in 1942. Upon graduation she moved to Washington D.C. to work for the government. In October of that year, she married the love of her life, Bill, which began a union that lasted for 62 years. During Bill’s service in the military overseas, she was able to monitor his whereabouts through her secretarial position at a general’s office. In 1948, they moved to Bar Harbor. She was a past member of Eastern Star, the Natural Bridge Grange in Cutler, the Mount Desert Island Hospital Auxiliary and a past council member for Rainbow Girls. She was a member of the Bar Harbor Congregational Church. Bud is survived by two daughters, Marjorie Beam of Bar Harbor, and Crystal Dow and husband, Gregory, of Ellsworth; her brother, Caleb Maker of East Machias; two sisters, Dorothea Look of Gardiner and Roberta Shaw of Cutler. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Benjamin Strout and his fiance, Michelle, of Bar Harbor, Joelle Rowe and husband, Ernie, of Buxton and Kati Sawyer and husband, Wayne, of Trenton, who are expecting Bud’s first great-grandchild in August. She will also be missed by her very special friend, Billie Marshall. She was predeceased by her husband, Wilbur L. Beam in 2003; one daughter, Sharon Beam; two brothers, Durward “Pudge” Maker and Llewellyn “Mike” Maker; and one sister, Marjorie Hamor. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, April 13, at Jordan-Fernald, 48 Eden St., Bar Harbor with the Rev. Dr. Sandra Reed officiating. Interment and a memorial service will be held in Cutler and will be announced at a later date.
