NEWPORT – Mildred “Miss Millie” Haining, 51, has lost her long, courageous battle with cancer, with her husband at her side. She passed quietly in her sleep, Jan. 15, 2008, at a Pittsfield hospital. Mildred was born Sept. 30, 1956, in Dexter, the daughter of Ralph and Alice (Kennedy) Hall. She graduated from Nokomis Regional High, Class of 1975, where she was a member of the Art Club. She continued her enjoyment of art and her craft skills throughout her life. Millie was a past member of the Church of Christ, where she also served as a Sunday school teacher. She was a co-owner of H & H Racing of Newport, where she enjoyed working as a mechanic and crewmember. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, while living her entire life as a Newport resident. She had been employed at Irving Tanning Co., Hartland. Millie is survived by her father; and husband, Stephen, both of Newport. She was predeceased by her mother, July 1, 2004. She is also survived by a son, James Haining and friend, Jamie, of Newport; two daughters, Martha Lane and husband, Mark, of Newport, and Chrystal Haining, also of Newport; three brothers, LeRoy and wife, Nancy Hall, of Etna, Millard and wife, Jane Hall, of Dexter, and John Hall of Hartland; two sisters, Nina Buzzell and friend, Scott, of Newport, and Geneva and husband, Joseph Sabina, of Connecticut; and nine grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main St., Newport, with Pastor Brian Woodbury officiating.
