SEAL COVE – Miles McIntire Jr. died Jan. 9, 2008, with his wife and two sons by his side at a Bangor hospital, after a brief, courageous battle with leukemia. He was born Feb. 4, 1924, in Boston, to Miles and Lucy (Reed) McIntire. Miles was a respected man in Seal Cove and forever will remain a part of the town’s history. More importantly, he earned the respect and love of his family, and will forever be remembered and loved by them. Miles married Eloise Hodgdon, Jan. 22, 1943, and raised his family in Seal Cove. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served as a medic, and a member of the American Legion Post, Southwest Harbor. Always interested in Tremont town affairs, he did his part by serving as a selectman, tax assessor and on countless committees through-out the years. He was a deputy sheriff for Tremont through the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department for 17 years. Miles owned the Carpenter Shop, Seal Cove, where he shared his knowledge and skills in carpentry and contracting. He was the trusted caretaker for many properties, including the Seal Cove Auto Museum, which he oversaw for 27 years. Miles not only built homes and cared for properties; he built lasting relationships with the people he worked for. His two sons and grandsons will always be grateful for the knowledge of carpentry and leadership that he shared with them. In addition to raising his family, serving the town, and earning a living, Miles enjoyed time spent outdoors. He enjoyed the camp on Tinkers Island, Blue Hill Bay, where many years of hunting adventures took place. Living adjacent to Seal Cove pond was perfect for Miles. A short ATV ride was all that was needed to get to an icehouse that was always filled with fish and fishing stories. Miles shared the bounty of his garden each summer and always rooted for his beloved Boston Red Sox each fall. Most of all, Miles reveled in the love of his family. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the light of his life. Children always made him smile and brought great joy to his life. Miles was a great family man. He is survived by his loving wife, Eloise; and his two sons, Marvin McIntire and his wife, Melanie, of Sullivan, and Craig McIntire and his wife, Marilyn, of Seal Cove. Miles was loved and admired by four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, Scott McIntire, his wife, Heather, and children, Bryon, Tyler and Rylee, Sheryl Woodard and her husband, Troy, and children, Brittany and Nicholas, Jeff McIntire and his wife, Kristin, and children, Eliana and Nolan, and Amy Mitchell and her husband, Troy, and daughter, Chloe. Miles is also survived by his brother, Thomas McIntire; and his sister, Virginia Hyten; nieces and nephews. Miles was predeceased by his sister, Francis Caruso; and his brother, Ralph McIntire. Friends are invited to call 5-7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert, where funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Wayne Buchanan officiating.
