YORK – Mortimer J. O’Connell, 91, of 74A Cider Hill Road, died Tuesday, April 17, 2007, at York Hospital. He was born Jan. 24, 1916, in Lewiston, son of William and Mary (Craig) O’Connell. He graduated from Lewiston High School, Class of 1935, and then joined the Maine National Guard. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was stationed in Italy. He was a Maine State Trooper and retired as a sergeant after 22 years of service. He was also a letter carrier with the York Post Office for eight years. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 143. He was a member of the Ocean Lodge of Masons and past master. He was a 32 degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies, Portland and the Maine Chapter Royal Arch, Kennebunk. He was predeceased by his wife, Bessie (Whitworth) O’Connell in 2005; and by five brothers, William, Louis, Daniel, Edward and Paul. He leaves a son, James M. O’Connell and his wife, Marjorie L. O’Connell, of Ogunquit; a stepdaughter, Marie Dry of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; a brother, David O’Connell of Harpswell; five grandchildren, Michael, John, Robert, David and Linda; five great-grand-daughters, Jessica, Jennifer, Jillian, Lindsey and Lauren.
